Unpack the Arts was a European project that provided residencies for cultural journalists in the context of twelve major festivals programming contemporary circus. The goal of the project was to facilitate the circulation of knowledge and experience, to develop the critical discourses of its participants, and to further the role of the media within the circus arts and contemporary society. The project had a great outcome: 120 articles on circus written by 120 European journalists. Bauke Lievens participated in the Unpack the Arts residency at the London Mime Festival in January 2014.

Deconstructing Circus

It's difficult for a circus artist to see a lot of work. If you're a writer, then a big part of the way you learn to write is by reading. If you're a composer, you listen to music. Visual artists go to exhibitions, and architects see design everywhere. In all these artforms there is ready access to the work of others, but circus artists have fewer opportunities. They spend more time and effort on their own training relative to time spent watching the work of others and learning through observation and reflection. Deconstructing Circus is an ongoing project initiated by John Ellingsworth that takes a small step toward addressing this problem by publishing videos of scenes from contemporary circus productions. Each video is accompanied by an interview with the production's artist(s) or director that deconstructs the structure, dramaturgy and thematic content of the scene. http://sideshow-circusmagazine.com/magazine/deconstructions
